Air Raid Prevention (ARP)

The ARP was setup under the Halifax Civil Emergency Corps.  Under the direction of Major Osborne Cromwell, the Halifax area was handed over to Fire Chief John Churchill.  The Corps responsibility was assisting local Fire Departments during the War years in case of air raids or major fires and emergencies.

The City was divided into North and South sections with Deputy Chief Richard Young in charge of South and Captain Arthur Gibson in charge of North.

Following the War much of the equipment purchased by the Federal Government for the ARP was declared surplus and sold or donated to local newly forming Volunteer Fire Departments.

Firefighters Overseas

During the second World War, 406 Officers and men from Fire Departments across Canada volunteered to go overseas as members of the Corp of Canadian Firefighters assisting the British Fire Service.

From the Halifax Region: Captain Joseph Harber, Hoseman Palmer Inglis, Hoseman Harry Curran and Fire Alarm Boss Ernie Peek were all part of the Canadian contingent.  Please visit the Canadian Firefighters Overseas web page.
